Confused by revit roofs.

You cannot join a roof to more than one top face of another roof. When a dashed line is displayed on the exterior of the wall press tab to select the chain of walls and click to place the roof lines. Next the walls need to be moved to the roof line to create the dormer. I hope my problem is clear when you look at the screenshot.
