Repairing a damaged subfloor is serious business but it doesn t have to be scary.
Before you replace damaged floor joists you must exterminate the insects or improve the drainage and ventilation so the problem won t reoccur.
Exit the area below the subfloor through the crawl space and obtain a piece of framing lumber as the replacement joist.
Make sure you also buy the same type of joist.
Find a new floor joist with these exact same dimensions.
When you replace the subfloor the new ends have to sit on the joists so cut out your wet subfloor along two joists on either side of the damage.
To replace floor joists you must first remove the floorboards that cover them.
Costs will vary widely depending on the extent and nature of the original problem.
Typical floor joists are two by eight or larger.
Floor joists can be damaged by boring insects such as termites or extended exposure to water.
Put the tip of the crowbar between the boards and push it in using the hammer to tap on the end.
